Whether you have a lot of household waste to dispose of or you’re managing a largescale clearance of unwanted commercial items that need recycling, using a van makes sense. Ideal for bigger and heavier items, vans can also carry more waste in one trip, saving you time and money on petrol.
Before taking vans to the tip, however, it’s important to understand that every council recycling centre will have its own rules. Here, we’ll look at four different local councils and the rules on van use at their tips.
Cheshire West and Cheshire (CWaC)
CWaC states that you can now take household waste to its recycling centres by van, as well as by pickup or trailer. However, vehicles must weigh under 3.5 tonnes and trailers must be under 3.5 metres in length. Trade waste cannot be taken to household waste recycling centres but will be accepted at trade waste recycling centres.
Wirral
Vans are accepted at Wirral tips, but an appointment must be made first. This is a simple process and free of charge. However, Wirral residents using vans are allowed a maximum of 12 visits to the tip per year.
Halton
While originally prohibited from disposing of household waste at tips, a limited number of vans can now access recycling centres each day in Halton. Van visits must be pre-arranged and vans may only contain household waste.
Flintshire
Finally, for tips in Flintshire, small and medium-sized vans can be used to dispose waste, but they must arrange a permit in advance. Trailers are not allowed on site if they are attached to a vehicle that requires a permit.
